The cholera epidemic that struck Puerto Rico in 1853 left exactly one town alone, inspiring both a local saying and a local culture in which moroveños set themselves apart from the rest of the island, which apparently also became part of their athletic identity.

(vuelta “turn” + áspid “asp”)

Vueltáspide, the mascot of the Sanisalvos de Morovis, is a gold snake with brown camouflage markings and eyes and red tongue, wrapped around a brown baseball bat topped with a classic baseball like a weird rod of Asclepius.
