The logo of the Liga Nacional Puertorriqueña: a big sky-blue circle, bordered in red and white, surrounding a smaller circle of darker blue with white borders, superimposed on which is a red-and-white nautical star that hosts the acronym "LNP" in black block letters.

Poetas de Toa Alta

Once famous as a center of agricultural exports and the birthplace of brave soldiery, Toa Alta in liberty became a splendid retreat for poets and artists of all stripes—and, of course, their wealthy patrons—from the hectic life of the capital region.

Mascot: Guaplumetón

(guapetón “handsome, flashy” + pluma “pen”)

Guaplumetón, the mascot of the Poetas de Toa Alta, is an animated purple quill with black hair, eyebrows, mustache, goatee (all patterned after Spanish poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer) and bottom feathers and a white spine, crossed against a scroll that reads “Quiero la rima que solloce y cante / que exprese la nostalgia y el deseo.” (“I want the rhyme that weeps and sings / that expresses nostalgia and desire.”) That’s a quotation from Lola Rodríguez de Tió’s “El poeta.”
